The Pacific Northwest boasts some of the most beautiful natural wonders in the world and we, as trail runners, have the ability to go deeper into these lands and experience them on a level worthy of their charm. With such vast distances between these gems, to visit them is a logistical and endurance feat in and of itself which is what makes Bus Run Bus such a tempting challenge.
To allow for the proper exploration of trails, coast and mountain we will be taking advantage of the unique service provided by Green Tortoise’s converted sleeper busses and professional drivers and staff.
Bus Run Bus will convene in San Francisco on the morning of June 28th. We’ll do a fun city run in the morning before getting settled into the bus that will take us to the finish line of the Western States 100 to witness the winners of the men’s and women’s races. From there we’ll do our one and only night drive in order to get to the Humbolt Redwoods for some incredible runs through the tallest trees in the world.
From the Redwoods we’ll go check out a completely different eco-zone in Lassen Volcanic National Park where lakes and cinder peaks abound. To tend to those legs that will have run many miles at this point, we’ll head to the Umpqua Hot Springs in Oregon to soak and camp for the night.
On to the McKenzie River Trail - widely considered one of the most scenic trails in the United States, where runners can choose between a short out-and-back, 13-miles or 26-miles.
Jaunts through Washington’s famous Columbia River Gorge and Mount Rainier will keep us moving towards our final destination in downtown Seattle for a parting run in Emerald City - Seattle.
We will cover at least one incredible trail per day. There will be options for loops, mountains, point-to-points and out-and-backs. Please note that the runs will be UNGUIDED. We will be providing gpx or similar mapping files for your phone and encourage folks to pair up with other runners of similar abilities.
Some things to consider:
Vegetarian (though there are plenty of opportunities to eat on one’s own). Please see the The Bus to get a better idea of what the meals are going to look like.
Sleeping situation: With the exception of the first night where we will be sleeping on the bus (except the driver!) you have the choice between sleeping on the bus or bringing your own tent and camping on the ground.
Schedule: The schedule is what allows for a trip like this to exist. It is every runner’s responsibility to be at the bus on time at the hour of departure.
Assisted vs. guided. The running on Bus Run Bus will be UNGUIDED. Excellent trails and signage allow for this trip to be assisted rather than guided. I will provide maps (physical and gpx files) of running options ranging from short five-mile jogs around camp to 20-30 mile day-long adventures for the most fit. Please familiarize yourself with one of many different mapping apps (GAIA GPS, AllTrails, Strava, etc.) and how to use it on your smart phone.
Fitness level - since we don’t need to stay together for any of the runs, individual’s running level is not a concern. To make the most of seeing the beauty of this journey, you are encouraged to come in as fit as you can without injuring yourself.
Extra costs - though we make every effort to ensure that our guests need not pay for anything once the trip has begun it is always best to prepare for some unforeseen expenses such as alcohol, extracurricular activities, meals away from the group, gas station snacks, souvenirs.
Schwag: I’ll be providing some sort of memorabilia. Please stay tuned!
