Hut Run Hut Alaska - Important Information for Participants
PACKING: Please pack light! Pretend you’re on a plane and you don’t want to pay the $50 checked luggage fee. That means a pack/suitcase that would fit into an overhead and a small pack for your on-bus stuff (book, camera, journal, etc.).
PACK LIST
Several pairs of socks/undies
1-2 pairs of running shoes
Running shorts/shirts
Lightweight running jacket
Sun Hat
Sunscreen
Sunglasses
Casual shoes/flip flops/sandals
A change of casual clothing
Fleece/sweater
Reading material – we’ll be doing a lot of running but there will also be some pleasant downtime at camp or on the bus.
Personal toiletries – toothbrush, toothpaste, small towel, biodegradable soap.
Earplugs if you are a light sleeper (I will be bringing extras if you forget)
Sleeping bag
Small camera (or camera phone)
Portable power storage if you have one
Hydration Pack - The hydration pack that you will be given at the start of the trip will be sufficient for carrying your days’ supply of water, food and an extra layer, but if you have a preferred method for carrying your stuff please bring it in addition.
Keep in mind that with the exception of a cold dip in a stream or lake from time to time we will not have the ability to wash any clothes.
RUNS: This will be your final reminder that the runs will be UNGUIDED. I have several suggestions for runs in each of the locations we’ll be running. They can be found in my Strava profile (https://www.strava.com/pros/184950) under “routes” (it appears as though you must use the phone app rather than the website to find another athletes' routes. When you find my profile, scroll all the way down to find routes). I have also uploaded these route suggestions in gpx form here in google drive (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/12TVK6keRQYYeVAI70wBuXOpnMftmfLMM?usp=sharing).
On these runs, I highly encourage teaming up - with a bus full of 29 other runners, it shouldn’t be hard to find a likeminded and similarly paced companion. The trails in these places are very well established and marked. You can do these runs without a smart watch or smart phone but if you plan on bringing either I would recommend downloading a mapping app. My personal favorite is GAIA (https://www.gaiagps.com) which is $20/year. Other great options are AllTrails, NatGeo, REI National Parks, and of course Strava which now has a function that will allow you to follow a route. Please try to familiarize yourself with whichever app you choose. I will do a little tutorial on our San Francisco run to help anybody out that is worried.
WhatsApp: Please download the app WhatsApp before your arrival. If you’re not familiar with WhatsApp - it is a simple and free messaging service that will allow us to stay connected during the trip. Why WhatsApp? Because it is international, multi-platform, and works with wifi and/or minimal data. https://www.whatsapp.com
EXTRA COSTS - please note the meals that you will be responsible for - all meals on the day of departure (August 4), Grand Canyon lunch (August 8) and the final dinner back in San Francisco (August 10). All other meals will be taken care of. Yosemite, Zion, Las Vegas and Death Valley will all have options for doing your own thing if you so choose.
